Barclay Tagg
Barclay Tagg is one of the most respected and recognizable horsemen in American Thoroughbred racing, known for his patience, horsemanship, and ability to develop elite runners with a steady, thoughtful approach. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Tagg has earned more than 1,600 victories and trained multiple Grade 1 winners while building a reputation for integrity and consistency at the highest levels of the sport.
A native of Abington, Pennsylvania and a former steeplechase rider, Tagg transitioned into training in the 1970s and steadily built one of racing’s most admired stables. He became a household name in 2003 with Funny Cide, the beloved New York-bred gelding who captured both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, becoming the first New York-bred to win the Derby. Tagg later guided Tiz the Law to victories in the Belmont Stakes, Travers Stakes, and Florida Derby, further cementing his legacy as one of the sport’s premier conditioners.
Known throughout the industry for putting the horse first, Barclay Tagg’s impact extends well beyond wins and trophies. His horsemanship, humility, and enduring success have made him one of the defining figures of modern New York racing.
